Plaistow Pre-School selected to win a share of a £12.5 million carrier bag charge fund

Plaistow Pre-School Tesco Grant Plans

Plaistow Pre-School is delighted to be shortlisted for a grant from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative.

Tesco has teamed up with Groundwork on its Bags of Help initiative in hundreds of regions across England and Wales. The scheme will see three community groups and projects in each of these regions awarded grants of £12,000, £10,000 and £8,000 – all raised from the 5p bag charge. Bags of Help offers community groups and projects in each of Tesco’s 416 regions across the UK, a share of revenue generated from the 5p charge levied on single-use carrier bags.

The public will vote in store from 31st October to 13th November on who should receive the £12,000, £10,000 and £8,000 awards. In total, there is over £12.5 million up for grabs.

Voting will be open in the Horsham Extra, Horsham Silver Wok, Horsham Esso petrol station and Billingshurst Express stores.

Our ethos is learning through play and with the funding, we aim to improve the outside play area to provide a more stimulating environment. The main centre point of the improvements will be a play boat, which will challenge the children’s skills and give them a platform for outdoor role play.

We are celebrating our 50th anniversary this year and being part of the Tesco Bags of Help initiative is a fantastic reward – we can’t wait to see the new pirate ship and hopefully other outside play activities from the funding!

Jodie Kidd Opens Maypole Fete

SONY DSCThe sun shone down on Plaistow for the Bank Holiday Maypole Fete organised to raise funds for Plaistow Pre-School.

Kirdford & Plaistow’s Vicar, Rev. Paul Redpath gave a lovely speech to open the Fete and local personality and model, Jodie Kidd walked with the children onto the green and joined in the traditional Maypole dance that officially marks the start of the Fete.  Much to the children’s delight, special guests Peppa Pig and George then joined in the fun.

There were plenty of amusements for all of the family with fairground rides, pony rides, a fun tug-o-war and a popular dog show judged by ex Crufts judge, Helen Davis.  Also on display were two beautiful classic cars, vintage tractors and a steam engine.

The Maypole Fete is the most important fundraiser of the year for Plaistow Pre-School. This lively, community pre-school has played a crucial role at the heart of the village since it opened in the 1960’s. Led by Spirit FM’s ‘Teacher of the Year 2013’ – Carol Krol and assisted by a team of energetic and trusted staff, the pre-school has a uniquely caring atmosphere.

Plaistow Pre-School Chairman, Emma Thornhill commented “We had such a great turnout for our Fete this year and with people giving so generously, we look set to have raised over £4000. From all the hard work that everyone put into the day, we will be able to now invest more in the facilities and equipment at the pre-school, which is great news for the children.”

In addition, Plaistow Pre-School will be donating approximately £200 raised from the popular barrow-o-booze to local charity, Chestnut Tree House.

Carol is awarded Teacher of the Year

carolFollowing a career spanning 30 years at Plaistow Pre-School, Carol Krol has been recognised as ‘Teacher of the Year 2013’ at the Spirit FM Local Hero Awards held at The Avisford Hilton Hotel earlier this month.

On the night, the Lead Practitioner at the Pre-School was presented with a beautiful award and a cheque for £200 that was given to DEBRA, Carol’s chosen charity.

Carol has seen generations through the Pre-School and is much loved by the preschoolers and their parents.  Vicky Miliam, the Mum who nominated Carol for the award said “We felt Carol should be recognised for her outstanding contribution to the village in which she lives and works with such boundless enthusiasm. She works so hard without seeking praise. Carol Krol is a truly special lady.”

What makes Carol so special is her amazing knowledge and understanding of each child on every level. At the end of each day, Carol can meticulously recall exactly what has happened with each child. She is extremely helpful in giving practical ideas on how to support their learning and development at home, which ensures a happy time at Pre-School. She has an instinctive and intuitive way of ensuring each child’s happiness and helping them to prepare for primary school.

Emma Thornhill, Plaistow Pre-School Chairman said “Carol has made a unique and tireless contribution to Plaistow Pre-School and she is an integral member of the local community.  She has such a genuine, caring nature which comes from her heart.”
