Curriculum: THRIVE
At Plaistow Preschool, we believe children learn best when they feel safe, valued, included and encouraged to explore the world around them. That belief sits behind everything we do, and it is built into our curriculum, which we call THRIVE.
Together Children spend time with others, building social skills and taking on small responsibilities. We encourage children to play cooperatively and share, develop friendships, take turns and listen to others, recognise and express their feelings appropriately, resolve conflicts with adult support, and understand what it means to work as part of a team.
Hands on We believe children learn through physical activity and practical experience, so our setting is built around learning by doing. Children develop fine and gross motor skills, learn to use tools and equipment safely, explore through sensory and practical activities, build early problem-solving skills, take part in cooking, gardening and creative projects, and build practical self-care skills such as dressing themselves.
Respect for the natural world We encourage children to respect themselves, other people, living things and the environment around them. This means exploring and appreciating nature, caring for plants, animals and their surroundings, understanding that living things need care, looking after resources and equipment, and showing kindness towards others.
Independence We prepare children for school and everyday life by nurturing their independence. Children practice dressing themselves, looking after their belongings, developing self-care routines, making choices and expressing preferences, attempting tasks on their own, building confidence to try new things, and taking responsibility for simple jobs within the preschool.
Voice We value every child's voice, recognising that communication and language are fundamental to learning. Children build vocabulary and communication skills, express their thoughts, ideas, feelings and opinions, listen and respond to others, ask questions, and take part in conversations, stories, songs and group discussions, all in ways that suit their individual needs.
Everyone We are committed to an inclusive curriculum where every child is valued, respected and able to participate. We celebrate each child's personality, abilities, interests, culture and family background, adapting our provision so that every child can access learning and feel they truly belong. We work closely in partnership with parents, carers and, where appropriate, other professionals, to support each child's development and wellbeing.
How we teach and learn
Our curriculum is delivered through a balance of child led play, adult guided activities, daily routines, planned experiences and opportunities for independent exploration. Practitioners observe children closely to identify their interests, strengths and next steps, and these observations shape our planning, so learning is always meaningful and matched to each child. We provide a stimulating environment where children can explore, investigate, practice skills and grow in confidence at their own pace.
Working with you.
We work closely with parents and carers to understand each child's needs and to make sure their time with us is positive, supportive and inclusive. We encourage you to share your child's interests, achievements and experiences with us, and we communicate regularly about progress, welcoming your ideas and contributions too.
Our THRIVE approach ensures children grow as confident, capable, respectful, independent and communicative individuals, who know that everyone has a valued place within our preschool community.
